Social Change Essay
Pollution is the presence in or introduction into the environment of a substance or thing that has harmful or poisonous effects. It has a very large impact on our planet, in fact, Over 40% of the U.S. population are at risk of developing diseases and premature death due to air pollution. Now this may seem like a high number, which it is, but this can be reversed. Air pollution is created by nonrenewable sources of energy being burned such as fossil fuels, oil, and natural gas. That means that to reduce the amount of air pollution created, we need to switch over to renewable sources of energy. These include wind power, solar energy, and hydropower. Sounds easy to just switch over to renewable sources right? Well actually it’s a lot more complicated than that. The production of energy with renewable sources is a lot more expensive to do and things like coal and oil are so easy to use because it’s a lot cheaper than creating windmills and dams across the country. In fact, fossil fuels are reaching a historic low in cost which makes it that much more appealing to use. Also, as the country begins to grow, there’s less and less space to create a wind turbine. They’re also said to be eyesores so nobody wants to see them from their house so that makes it even more difficult. However, there has been an increase in the use of solar electricity. It’s cheaper to produce solar electricity in Dubai compared to gaining energy from gas turbines.
I think air pollution is something that affects how we all live. Many people in China need to wear masks to protect themselves from exposure to such toxic air, and I feel as if it’s only a matter of time where that’s how we have to live here in the United States. I think it’s crucial to make the attempt to switch to renewable sources not only for us humans, but for animals as well. Polluted air can damage trees and destroy habitats for some animals. Many companies, like Tesla, who created a battery that can power most homes during the evenings using energy from solar panels during the day. This is great, but it’s not always readily available for everyone to use which makes it difficult to make the full switch. My photographs support my whole idea by raising awareness on the subject and portraying my views on it.
